The Different Types of Border Collie Explained
Border Collies are widely recognised as one of the most intelligent and capable dog breeds in the world.
While there is only one Border Collie breed, there are several recognised types and variations based on coat, colour, build, and working purpose.
At Banham Sheepdogs, we work with Border Collies in real working environments, where these differences are seen clearly in temperament, drive, and ability.
Border Collie Types by Coat
Border Collies are commonly grouped into three coat types. All are recognised within the breed and are equally capable working dogs.
Rough Coat Border Collie
Rough-coated Border Collies have long, feathered fur, particularly around the chest, legs, and tail.
This is the classic Border Collie appearance most people recognise.
- Excellent protection against wind and rain
- Common in working and companion dogs
- Requires regular grooming
Smooth Coat Border Collie
Smooth-coated Border Collies have short, sleek coats with minimal feathering. These dogs are often favoured for fast-paced farm work.
- Low-maintenance coat
- Less mud and debris retention
- Very practical for daily sheep work
Medium Coat Border Collie
Medium-coated Border Collies sit between rough and smooth coats, with light feathering.
This is one of the most common coat types seen in working sheepdogs.
- Good balance of protection and ease of care
- Well suited to active working homes
- Common in training and trial dogs
Border Collie Colours and Patterns
Border Collies come in a wide range of colours and markings. Colour has no impact on intelligence or working ability.
- Black and White
- Red and White
- Blue Merle
- Red Merle
- Tri-colour
- Chocolate
- Lilac
- Sable
- Brindle
Eye colour may be brown, blue, green, or mixed, particularly in merle-coated dogs.
Border Collie Types by Purpose
Border Collies are often described by their breeding purpose rather than appearance. This is especially important when choosing a dog for work, sport, or home life.
Working Line Border Collie
Working line Border Collies are bred primarily for herding livestock. They are lean, athletic, and highly driven, with a strong natural instinct to work sheep.

These dogs thrive with experienced handlers and benefit greatly from structured sheepdog training, lessons, and clinics
.
Show Line Border Collie
Show line Border Collies are bred to conform more closely to kennel club standards. They typically have a slightly stockier build and a more uniform appearance.
Although generally calmer than working lines, they still require significant mental and physical stimulation.
Sport and Companion Border Collie
Sport and companion Border Collies are commonly bred for agility, obedience, and active pet homes.
- Highly trainable
- Balanced drive and sociability
- Excellent performance dogs
Are Border Collies Different Breeds?
No. All Border Collies belong to the same breed. The differences seen are the result of selective breeding for function, environment, and working style – not separate sub-breeds.
Choosing the Right Border Collie Type
The right Border Collie for you depends on your experience, activity level, and whether the dog will work livestock, compete in sport, or live as an active companion.
